The National Research Council of the National Academies commissioned this study of land ownership in the United States, and how the use of land parcel databases (known as cadastres) to achieve a nationally integrated resource has not yet been realized. Designed for use by federal agencies and land developers, this book outlines the specific benefits a comprehensive database would yield, and documents the progress of this project since its inception in 1980. Specific obstacles to the completion of the land parcel database, such as difficulties in documenting Native American reservations, are also explained.
