Examining the Changing Role of Supervision in Doctoral Research Projects ― Emerging Research and Opportunities

The author examines the role and best practices of supervision in doctoral research projects, with an emphasis on computer science and information technology research. She considers how approaches to doctoral supervision are influenced by the research context, environment, and student culture; the degree of supervisor engagement during the process, particularly in research planning, conceptualization, and experimentation and validation; the perspective of the doctoral candidate during the process; factors influencing the collaborative experiences of a research candidate with the supervisor and dissertation committee; and the changing role of the supervisor in the global environment of the community of scholars.
