After Holland (1929-2015) died, colleagues and former students started looking for his publications, and realized that much of his early work on computer logic and related themes was now very difficult to find, yet contained ideas that were cogent to research today. Here are 15 papers representing his work in computer logic from the late 1950s to the 1970s, emphasizing the foundation under what is now called computer science. Their topics include, iterative circuit computers, nonlinear environments permitting efficient adaptation, a new kind of turnpike theorem, genetic algorithms and the optimal allocation of trials, and studies of the spontaneous emergence of self-replicating systems using cellular automata and formal grammars.
