This book details a study based on in-depth interviews with 73 young people who first entered university studies in South Africa in 2009, analyzing broader influences on their experiences of success and failure, particularly agency and social background (including the family context), as well as how higher education has promoted social mobility and economic advancement. It discusses student trajectories through the undergraduate curriculum and how the hurdles of passing or failing a course build up into larger obstacles; the considerations of students before going to college, including the role of families and communities; the broader student experience of university life; students' lives after they leave the university, particularly those who did not complete their degree, most who are continuing their studies at another institution; the deliberations and experiences of those who continue with postgraduate studies; and their experiences entering the workplace.
