Understanding Mental Health Practice

This text outlines mental health practice for mental health nursing students. It covers mental and physical health and well-being, arguing that they are interlinked and illustrating that mental health and mental illness are not the same; common mental health issues, such as psychosis and anxiety, mood, eating, and personality disorders; suicide risk and mental health; assessment and care planning, including using the Roper, Logan, and Tierney model; psychotherapeutic approaches like psychodynamic therapies, the person-centered approach, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and brief solution-focused therapy; psychopharmacology; and recovery from mental health problems. Relevant competences and Essential Skills Clusters of the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council are presented at the beginning of each chapter.
