Book 14 of the Iliad was the focus of particular interest at an early date, says Krieter-Spiro, the story of the cunning seduction of the father of the gods by his own wife providing entertainment and a welcome reprieve after three Books of battle. She explains that even in Antiquity the depiction of the gods was a subject of intense debate, and recent scholarship has noted the influence of Near Eastern ideas. The consultation of the leaders in the initial section, and the final section with its image of increasing Achaian pressure on the Trojans also attracts scholarly attention. She presents line-by-line commentary in the same format as previous volumes. For the English translation of the 2015 German original, she has made some revisions, and incorporated literature published during the interim.
