GORE VIDAL (1925-2012) was the author of more than twenty-four novels, five plays, many screenplays, more than two hundred essays, and the critically lauded memoir, Palimpsest. Vidal's United States: Essays 1952-1992 won the 1993 National Book Award. He died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of eighty-six.
