This book analyzes labour in the artificial intelligence industry to conduct a critique of the theory of immaterial labour through the lens of Marxist theory. While immaterial labour theory posits that information technologies will increase the autonomy of the working class from capital, this book argues that, at least in the artificial intelligence industry, high-tech labour remains firmly under the control of capital, and is in fact, already being automated via a technique the author terms synthetic automation. This is demonstrated through a labour process analysis of commercial machine learning software production which draws on interviews conducted with workers and management in the artificial intelligence industry. Also included are a political economic history, showing how artificial intelligence went from a fringe research interest for a handful of scientists in the 1950s to a centerpiece of cybernetic capital in 2015.
