Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Leadership, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: In recent years, the topic of women in management positions has been increasingly discussed in public. The proportion of women in the workforce has risen sharply; however, women's proportion in leadership positions remains exceedingly low. This paper aims at identifying and explaining the primary barriers determining women's scarce presence in executive positions. Incorporating and drawing on previous literature on why women still do not rise to board rankings in substantial numbers, this study assesses the various triggers and causes of gender imbalance in high-level positions. The empirical research involved guideline-based expert interviews. In the process, five women who hold or have recently held leadership roles were questioned concerning their experiences in leadership. The study's findings revealed several interrelated gender-specific leadership obstacles that operate at the macro ("societal"), meso ("organizational"), and micro ("individual") levels of society. This study updates the existing literature and highlights obstacles and challenges that women face in advancing their careers.
