The Red Agate is a novel based on the reality of the large-scale poverty alleviation in China. An ancient village called Liucheng, which was said to be cursed by a Lama and could never be prosperous, shook off poverty through the efforts of Chen Fang, a determined and hardworking official, and several enterprising young people from this village. They tried various ways to help the villagers earn more income, such as planting apricot trees, running a small workshop to make pickles, and developing rural tourism. Although the process was full of difficulties, the villagers finally got to the way heading to a richer and better life.
