Ovarian Cancer: Translational Research

Ovarian cancer is a gynecologic malignancy in which the development of cancer cells occurs in the ovaries. The cells reproduce rapidly and have the ability to infiltrate and impair healthy body tissue. Majority of the times ovarian cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage and traditional treatments provide minimal improvements in overall survival. Tumor heterogeneity and clonal evolution in ovarian cancer can be critical with respect to drug resistance. Hence, liquid biopsies become necessary for monitoring cancer development. The complexity of ovarian cancer, as compared to other solid cancers, makes the development of alternative targeted therapies a difficult and time consuming process. Antiangiogenic medications have been proven to be effective in the treatment of ovarian cancer with modest patient outcomes.
