It's 1962. Portuguese immigrant, Veronica arrives in the US with her new husband, via a prearranged marriage to her cousin, in search of the American Dream. That dream proves to be elusive.
While raising her two sons, Veronica struggles to balance her domineering live-in mother-in-law, and her failing marriage. Since divorce is out of the question, she is faced with the difficult choice: leave her husband and run away with her sons, get rid of her mother-in-law through extreme measures, or simply follow the guidance from her mentor, Aunt Heydee, whose advice still rings in her ears, "grab the bull by the horns and stop complaining."
