Kogodakus is dead at the hands of Valia the Peacemaker. The Heart-Tree and all those living in the glades beneath the shade of her leaves are safe. Azaki has been granted his mantle of spider-silk and his place as a warrior in the Clan of the Webbed Pit by Anastagus himself.
But he is still cast adrift; unable to return to the Webbed Pit while Uth嫜i might speak against him for betraying the clan and protecting the Heart-Tree from Kogodakus. And he is still torn, unable to remain at the Heart-Tree while his debt to Otuko is unpaid.
As Anastagus begins to martial the full might of the clans against the world he once so fervently fought for, sending raiders across the Lake at the Edge of the World, Azaki is once more drawn into the fray to defend the people of the great Beacon there. He hopes, so close to his homelands, to find a way back to Otuko to honour his debt to her.
Yet, instead, he finds himself at the Theatre of the Worldbreaker, vast shrine to Estrif, Lord of Bloodshed and Sacrifice, the seed of the Heart-Tree within his grasp.
And there in the moutains, where the veil of the Heart-Tree's protection is thin, the Spider is surely waiting to avenge Azaki's betrayal...
