What is reality, what is illusion? Miranda and Duncan are pushing the boundaries of science and philosophy, experimenting with thought-energy as they question the over-abundance of Dark Matter.

Miranda is killed when an experiment goes awry and Duncan finds himself being pressurised to give up the Project, whilst at the same time trying to cover up the real cause of Miranda's death.

An enigmatic girl called Starlight is an embodiment of the reality/illusion dilemma . As she puts it: "Everything has a logical explanation. It may not be entirely Newtonian, but there is no magic in it."

The story weaves between Lancaster, London and the Lake District as the characters wrestle with the morality and dangers associated with the Project.

Professor Duncan Fielding and his wife Miranda are on the verge of establishing a new theory about parallel worlds, which they regard as a piece of academic research. Miranda dies in suspicious circumstances during an experiment.

Miranda's sister receives a terse note that alerts her to some strange circumstances associated with Miranda's death. Duncan's colleague, Simon, who worked with Miranda for a short time and would appear to be implicated in her death.

Duncan comes under pressure to sell out the Project, whilst others, including an enigmatic girl who calls herself Starlight, seek to persuade him to scrap the research as it poses a grave danger to mankind.

The story weaves between Lancaster, London and the Lake District with the 'final act' taking place at Long Meg stone circle on the day of the winter solstice.
