"Clutching Estrada, the vampire hauled him up through the jagged glass. His feet were off the ground. In a breath, he'd be gone. Michael sprung, and clinging to Estrada's back, he pulled at the curved talons embedded beneath his clavicle. Though his hands were flayed by the vampire's claws, still he pulled and pulled. Estrada's bones snapped. And then they were both free falling.
But suddenly, the bloody claws punctured Michael's chest. Screaming, he stared down. Saw Estrada hit the deck. Saw his friends drag him off. And then Michael was in the sky, being buffeted by the night wind as the creature carried him up and up.
Then, as if in sudden recognition of its mistake, the vampire somersaulted and careened down. Michael's face hit the surface of a concrete sea. Breath caught. Pain surged. Beating its thunderous wings, the creature dragged him through the waves. Gasping. Broken-faced. Drowning.
And then he was under, and salt water filled his lungs."
