After an environmental catastrophe, humanity lives in an underground shelter ruled by a totalitarian regime that uses constant surveillance and propaganda to maintain control. The main character, once part of a failed rebellion, hides their identity while longing for a world with real beauty and freedom. When the authorities discover who they are, they flee the shelter and escape into the devastated surface world. Though the environment is harsh, the protagonist finds signs of life and hope, and continues the struggle against the regime from outside.
