商品簡介

A Journey from Iraq to America is a powerful coming-of-age memoir that traces the true story of a young girl navigating war, displacement, and identity across three countries-and the inner strength that carried her through it all.

Ayat "Aya" Altaii was born in Baghdad during one of the most dangerous times in Iraq's modern history. As a child of the Shiite faith, she witnessed the deep divisions that tore her country apart-and saw firsthand the violence that came with it. Her earliest memories were not of playgrounds or cartoons, but of bombings, soldiers, and the constant fear of loss. Her father had left when she was just a baby, seeking safety in America, while her mother stayed behind and raised the children alone amidst the chaos of war.

In a voice both innocent and wise beyond her years, Aya recounts the terrifying nights in Ghazaliya when American soldiers raided her home, and the heartbreaking days when friends and family were killed in the violence. She shares her family's attempted escape to Jordan, only to be turned away at the border because of their faith, and the struggle to survive after returning to Baghdad with nothing.

Then came Syria-a temporary stop on the way to America. There, Aya discovered the pain of exclusion as she watched other children go to school while she stayed home. But it was also in Syria where she formed one of her most touching friendships-with a blind girl named Noor, with whom she shared dreams, fake parties, and laughter that briefly lifted them above their uncertain future.

Finally, in 2007, Aya arrived in the United States. But the journey was far from over. She faced the daunting challenge of learning English, adapting to a foreign culture, and rediscovering her identity in a world where she was often misunderstood. Through painful moments of bullying and cultural confusion-including being laughed at in math class or being told she couldn't choose a colored paper-Aya clung to hope, education, and her mother's unwavering strength.

This book follows her through her early years in America, ending with her final days in elementary school. Along the way, she reclaims her voice, reconnects with her childhood dream of becoming a teacher, and learns that even in the face of trauma, there is space to grow.

A story of migration, resilience, faith, and fierce love, Between Fear and Hope is not just a memoir-it is a tribute to all those who carry their past like a shadow but walk forward anyway. It is for every refugee, every misunderstood child, and every mother who gives everything so her children can have more.

From the ashes of war to the heart of a classroom, Aya's story reminds us that the hardest journeys often give rise to the strongest voices.
