商品簡介

The play Say No to Suicide: Say Yes to Life untangles the complex dynamics of the Caldwell family, in which each member, to varying degrees, is afflicted with suicidal tendencies. At the heart of the play is Peter Caldwell, a 75-year-old retired English professor from New York University, who masks his inner turmoil beneath an ostensibly joyful fa蓷de. He is unable to bear the burden of loneliness after his wife's suicidal act. His three children also reflect the psychological imprint of this grief in their own ways. George wages war with his marital disenchantment and finds himself emotionally estranged after being trapped in a loveless marriage with Jennifer Hastings. Adam, the younger son, is charming, morally upright, and loyal to his wife, Olivia Walker. His moral compass is evident when he rejects Jennifer's advances and demonstrates his loyalty to Olivia, who is torn between her aspirations and ethical values.

In stark contrast, Jennifer Hastings, George's wife-once a beauty queen-is emotionally detached from her husband and family. In an attempt to cope with her childhood traumas, she chooses a hedonistic lifestyle, brashly flouting societal norms through her extramarital liaisons.

Julian transforms her pain into purpose by founding a suicide prevention centre in Manhattan. Her husband, Joe Harrington, is a charismatic and compassionate man. He quietly supports her because he is cognisant of the emotional fragility that pervades her family.

This play sheds light on a broad spectrum of contemporary issues that often precipitate suicidal despair: academic pressure, marital breakdown, drug addiction, job insecurity, financial instability, drinking, gambling, stock market downturns, and corporate burnout. Through its richly drawn characters and emotionally charged narrative, this psychological family drama probes existential dilemmas. This play conveys a message that parents and other family members, no matter how broken, have no moral right to commit suicide. More than a theatrical expression, this play is an earnest plea to safeguard each life in every family.
