The Hyper Object is a mythical artifact said to grant unimaginable power to its wielder. Few believe it truly exists, but those who do would stop at nothing to find it.

Below the surface of an inhospitable planet lies a sprawling network of people whose existence relies on Hyper, a precious mineral found deep underground, for light, food, warmth, and shelter. Those most favored in this hierarchical society are the shapers, people born with the ability to manipulate Hyper with their thoughts. Serving as architects, healers, machinists, and countless other professions, shapers wield Hyper to support themselves, power their communities, and carve out a comfortable place in the world.

Those born of a high bloodline near the upper crest without this power are sent to the Hyper mines.

In this first book of the ongoing fantasy sci fi series, Lees has almost come to terms with being a powerless mite after having been forcefully relocated to Last Light two years ago. Life this deep below the surface is unglamorous, hard, and vastly different from where she'd grown up, but Lees is good at her job and has made friends and very few enemies.

When two strangers arrive in town seeking the most powerful object in existence, Lees is caught in the conflict. Deep underground, it's Lees who finds the mythical artifact of immense power and is forced to make a terrible choice to protect herself and her community.
