Ana was born in a world plagued with poverty, ignorance, hopelessness and misery. In a world that "men commanded" and women had no say on their decisions or wishes. Women had to be submissive and obedient to their parents and later to their husbands. Women had to obey even the most senseless and clueless orders in addition to be regarded as less intelligent or creative than men. When Ana was born, her father was expecting a boy since "boys" were a "blessing" while girls were only a "waste of time and money"... As a result, that concept only created a challenge in Ana's mind, she would grow up and educate herself to demonstrate that there is no impediment in any girl's mind, other than the poor perception of others.
