Whaling Voyages Round the World in the Britannia and Speedy (Capt. Thomas Melvill) 1791-1796 presents the first publication of the remarkable journal of David Brown, surgeon aboard the whaling transports Britannia and Speedy during their global voyages under Captain Thomas Melvill. These voyages unfolded against the backdrop of the French Revolutionary Wars, and Brown's narrative captures the risks of global travel in a time of maritime conflict. His journal offers not only an account of the early Pacific and Atlantic whaling enterprise but also a rare civilian perspective on navigating the hazards of wartime seas.
Alongside these travel accounts, Brown provides detailed reflections on the flora and fauna of the regions visited, contemporary philosophical and religious ideas, whaling practices, and shipboard medicine. He further offers valuable contemporary insights into South American mining, labour, and metallurgy in the decades preceding the region's major political and economic transformations. His vivid descriptions of the perilous enterprise of whaling in both the Southern and Northern Whale Fisheries add depth and colour to this now dimly remembered era.
Editor John Melville, a descendant of Captain Melvill, provides careful transcription, a substantial modern introduction, extensive footnotes, and supplementary indexes that illuminate Brown's sources, references, and world.
