Darwin Trip: Angel in Disguise

Some trips are planned. Others are traps disguised as holidays.

For years, I (Christian ) dreamed of driving from Geelong to Darwin - a clean start, a big sky, a place to build something real. I wanted to open an R&B club for Indigenous people, somewhere music and culture could live without judgement. That was the plan. That was the dream.

I didn't know it at the time, but the family had already written the script. They called it a "trip of a lifetime", but it was really a mission - a last-chance rescue disguised as a road trip. A contract was signed behind the smiles: if I took Sarah with me, she would stay clean. No alcohol. No drugs. No relapses. Seven rehabs behind her, one more chance ahead.

I thought I was helping.

I thought I was the guardian.

But an angel in disguise can still be fooled.

I was chosen because she trusted me. I was chosen because they couldn't control her anymore. And I agreed because I believed in her - believed in the version of Sarah that still existed somewhere beneath the bottles, the chaos, the withdrawals, the lies, the laughter, the tears.

The car was packed with hope, but addiction doesn't ride quietly.

It sits beside you. It breathes. It waits.

What was meant to be freedom turned into a battlefield on wheels - laughter one minute, madness the next. The outback stretched for thousands of kilometers, but the real journey was inside the car, inside her, inside me.

I didn't know that by trying to save her, I'd almost lose myself.

This is the story of a trip to Darwin -

a road full of heat, music, dust, broken promises, and one girl's war with the bottle.

It's about love, loyalty, exhaustion, humour, hope - and the moment I realised guardian angels don't always have wings.

Sometimes, they just have a steering wheel, a suitcase, and no idea what they've just agreed to.
