Amidst the shadows between this world and the next, demons such as the Sorrowsworn feast upon the suffering of humanity. Using little more than a handful of choice words, they trap their victims inside the most agonizing moments of their past, leaving no room to resist and no prayer of escape.
Until now.
Within the confines of the Northern Colorado Medical Center, a handful of patients have recently begun whispering about a dark, knife-wielding figure in a long-brimmed fedora who appears only at the edge of despair. To some, his haunting presence is the embodiment of fear. To others, his dark visage has become the last vestige of hope.
Though reports of this "Hat Man" are inconsistent at best, one fact remains unsettlingly clear: patients who see him tend to recover more completely than those who do not.
For one young girl, the Hat Man has just become much more than a mere rumor. He has become the figure who stands in the shadows as the tortured voices of the Sorrowsworn call to her. Haunted and unprepared, she will soon learn why he has chosen her and why her doctor keeps pressing her to confront a truth buried deep within her past.
