When you recite the Nicene Creed, you're speaking words forged by Athanasius (296-373 AD) in his fight against Arianism. When you understand the Trinity, you're grasping concepts clarified by the three Cappadocian Fathers (330-395 AD). When you read the Bible, you're holding Jerome's translation work from 382-405 AD that took him decades to complete in a cave in Bethlehem.

The stakes couldn't have been higher.

Augustine (354-430 AD) watched the Roman Empire collapse while writing "City of God"-creating Christian philosophy that would guide Western thought for a millennium. Ambrose (339-397 AD) stood toe-to-toe with emperors, proving that spiritual authority could humble earthly power. John Chrysostom (349-407 AD) preached with such force that his enemies exiled him twice.
