That's all her grandmother left her - a handwritten postscript at the bottom of a will, beneath thirty-one rooms, four floors of Victorian architecture, and a building that turns its lights on before guests arrive.
Wren Ashby is good at not needing things. She's spent years perfecting it - the single carry-on, the pre-booked return ticket, the careful inventory of a life that looks fine, which is to say it looks like no one particularly lives there. She arrives at the Aldermoor Inn in December to do what needs to be done: assess the estate, authorize the demolition, and leave before Christmas with a clean resolution and nothing attached to it.

Bram Fosse arrives on December 17th in the guise of a contractor, armed with a measuring tape and a knowledge of the inn that goes far deeper than any preliminary assessment could account for. She knows which window seat has the clearest light, which room stays warm without explanation, and what Wren's grandmother spent the last decade of her life preparing - and for whom.
What unfolds between them is not a simple love story, though it is that too. It is the story of a woman learning that the self she has been quietly withholding from the world is not too much - that a place can hold her, that a person can see her, and that being received is not the same thing as being diminished. The Aldermoor Inn is full of magic: doors that open themselves, wallpaper that blooms overnight, a long-term resident named Pell who has occupied room twelve since before anyone can account for. But the deepest magic is the slower kind - the kind that happens when you stop apologizing for the space you occupy, and let something good be true.
