A dark Shadow Spirit sweeps into the village and snatches a sacred ceremonial hand drum. Ten-year-old Hummingbird knows something is terribly wrong. The drum belongs to her family, and without it, the tribe's harmony is broken, leaving them vulnerable to danger and misfortune.
Though the tribe elder warns Hummingbird and her younger brother, Sage, that they are too young, Hummingbird's sense of responsibility to her family and tribe compels her to get the sacred drum back. Determined to set things right, the siblings slip into the forest after the Shadow to rescue the sacred drum.
Along the way, they meet Raimy and Aki, two brave ten-year-olds who join their quest. Together, they cross a raging river, face a venomous snake, and confront the Shadow Spirit.
