The Wise-Foolish Sūtra is a significant work within the Avadāna (Parables) section of the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō (No. 202). It was compiled by Master Huijue in 445 CE (Northern Wei Dynasty) and translated into Vietnamese by the late Most Venerable Thich Trung Qu嫕 (1918-2003). The meaning of the title is simple yet profound:
With 46 relatable stories, the sutra is a powerful testament to the philosophy of cause and effect: "goodness begets goodness, and evil begets evil." It also chronicles the journey of practicing the Paramitas (Perfections) by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past to save sentient beings and guide them from evil toward the good.
Because these stories are so applicable to modern life, I have frequently used themes from this sutra for Dharma talks with Buddhists in Vietnam and the United States. This was especially true during the "Applied Dharma" program at Huong Sen Temple throughout the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022) and on broadcast programs like Asia World TV and the Cali Today channel between 2023 and 2025. Now, with sufficient favorable conditions, I have compiled these teachings into two volumes within the Bảo Anh Lạc Bookshelf:
Volume 123: Tr?Tuệ Cổ Xưa v?B跬 Học Ứng Dụng Hiện Đại qua Kinh Hiền Ngu (Vietnamese).
Volume 124: Ancient Wisdom and Modern Practical Lessons through the Wise-Foolish Sūtra (English).
