In the years prior to the 2020 global shutdown, working remotely from home was less common. On the East Coast it was most common among artists, craftspeople and programmers. But on the West Coast, among companies working in Silicon Valley, it was more prevalent. Those companies liked it when people could work from home, because they were just as effective, and the cost savings that came with not having to provide a desk and a roof helped their bottom line.
Since the 'shutdown', working remotely from home, at least part of the time, has become increasingly popular in certain fields. This is especially true where specialized skills, a talent for strategy and high intelligence are required. Add access to high-speed internet to provide instantaneous communications and it makes little difference if the co-worker is in the next office, or the next state. Recent studies have found people working remotely are more effective and satisfied with their work than those forced back into the corporate office.
There are significant personal benefits team members enjoy when working from home, not the least of which is the time and money they save from eliminating their daily commute. That cost savings helps their personal bottom line. For our society, there are benefits that come from getting excess commuters off the road. Besides reducing pollution and creating a healthier environment, it reduces people's stress from sitting in traffic.
The money they save can go to life-enhancing pursuits like education and vacations. So, is it any surprise that workers who moved to the remote workspace during the shutdown later resisted going back to the traditional office arrangement?
If you've been working from home effectively, you may not need this information. By trial and error, you may have gradually found the location in your home, and an arrangement where you are comfortable and effective. Although we suspect you'll still find useful insights in this book.
You could be one of those folks who do their best work outside of the house and you probably have a couple of favorite coffee shops, or a commercial space that you share ad hoc with other people. But even in that location, you probably have one or two special seats in the space you prefer. Of course, as the saying goes, 'You're perfect the way you are, but you could be better!' Hopefully, we're going to help you improve aspects of your 'perfect workspace', so they support and promote your talents more!
Are you someone who finds themselves working at home for the first time, or having to create a workspace in a new home? How do you quickly and effectively arrange the optimal personal workspace customized for your personality, skills and talents?
The challenge is our schools don't teach students how to put together a super-duper, personalized office for doing important work while feeling great. Instead, from first grade on, kids are stuck at generic desks designed for average children, to promote conformity and order over brilliance and innovation.
