Ward is a third-year internal medicine resident at Loyola, a widower, a former Division One baseball pitcher who runs the free walk-in clinic at the shelter on Tuesdays in a navy quarter-zip and a heavy old Rolex he does not, on principle, take off. He is not looking for anything. He is not, by any reasonable accounting, ready. But on a Tuesday in February, in a break room with a flickery light and two paper cups of bad coffee, a woman walks in with a thermos.
This is the slow patient story of a young woman finding her way back to a version of herself she had thought was lost. It is the story of Adri Jackson learning, in increments, on Tuesdays, in donation rooms, in break rooms, in hospital corridors, on the brick sidewalks of Logan Square in April, how to love yourself again. It is about reclaiming a voice in a world that has decided what your voice is. It is about the difference between the night that broke you and the slow work that puts you back together. It is about hope as a discipline, and about being seen at the exact moment of being ready to be seen.
