The economy is in a state of upheaval. Financial crises, the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have presented challenges for companies worldwide. The steel trading sector has also been affected, as these crises have impacted both internal and external stakeholders alike. This book seeks to answer the question of how companies in the Austrian steel trading sector secure their survival in times of crisis. It analyses how businesses respond to different crises and which corporate strategies are necessary to secure market positions and achieve competitive advantages. The focus is on agile structures, flexible supply chains and proactive measures such as diversification, sustainability and technological innovation. Based on literature review and qualitative expert interviews, the study demonstrates that long-term business success is founded on forward-looking resource management, stable business relationships and the ability to learn from crises. Practical suggestions, such as working from home to retain staff and building trust with stakeholders, are presented as crucial factors for resilience and competitiveness.
