商品簡介

Some inheritances aren't objects. They're unfinished conversations, passed down until someone finally answers them.

Twenty-five years after Abir and Harleen built a life together across Berlin and Boston, their children have grown into their own complicated inheritances. Arin has spent his whole life fluent in a very particular arithmetic - which grandmother to call for recipes, which language to answer the phone in, how to be Bengali and Punjabi and entirely American all at once, sometimes in the same sentence. Mira, younger and more visual, has become an architect in her own right, discovering in Copenhagen that the family's obsession with what a building remembers is not something she inherited by accident.

Fifteen years after his grandfather's death, the notebook Aniruddha once gave him - a single word on its first page, Memory, and a promise that more would come - still sits on a shelf in the house behind the green gate, three words further along than when he received it. What no one has decided yet is who writes the next one.

When a structural crack threatens the family home in Kolkata, three generations are pulled back to the house that started it all - forcing a reckoning with what's actually been kept, what's quietly been lost, and what one cousin gave up so everyone else could leave. Meanwhile, Harleen's own recognition, hard-won and long overdue, forces the family to ask a harder question: what does it cost the people who stay quiet so someone else can shine?

What the Gate Remembers is a novel about inheritance as an active, ongoing negotiation - not a single gift handed down once, but a conversation between generations that never quite finishes. It is about a green gate that has watched everyone in this family arrive and leave and come back again, a notebook waiting for its next word, and the particular, quiet work of figuring out what home means once you've built one everywhere and nowhere at once.

Spanning Kolkata, Boston, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Delhi across more than two decades, this is the story of what a family owes each other across generations, oceans, and the ordinary Sunday calls that turn out, eventually, to be the thing that held everyone together all along.

Book Two of The Gate of Belonging series, following What the Gate First Knew.
