When President-Elect Arthur Davis is assassinated shortly after Election Day, the "First Tuesday" in November, pandemonium breaks loose across the United States. Under its Constitution, the people do not elect their President; the President is elected by the votes of five hundred and thirty-eight men and women, chosen as the Electors under the Electoral College System. These Electors must meet, in just a few short weeks, in their respective state capitols, and cast their votes. What was once a given, that the Electors will follow the popular vote, is now in doubt. The death of the President-Elect is an opportunity to seize power, a power so great, that those who crave it, will do whatever it takes to possess it.
Attorney Jack Banner, is thrust into the mayhem, chosen to defend the man arrested for the murder of the President Elect. At his side, Alison Stevens-a smart, gifted attorney whose providence is mysterious.
Banner quickly learns that nothing is as it seems and there may no one he can trust. Lies, half-truths, hidden agendas. His client, who he has sworn to defend, may be guilty. Alison, who seems to feel the same emotional connection as he, is hiding a sinister past. The FBI, purporting to protect him in the growing chaos, may itself be compromised. His colleagues, who he thought were friends, are interested only in the influence and reward the case might bring them. The legal system, which he thought was the bastion of freedom, seems ready to crumble from the assaults on its foundations.
Can Jack preserve the fundamental principle of democracy - the rule of law. That even in the midst of total chaos, truth and justice will prevail. Or will Jack fall short, and watch democracy die, as he dies with it.
