Women, Power, and Property:The Paradox of Gender Equality Laws in India

出版日:2022/04/14 作者:Rachel E. Brulé  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  裝訂:平裝
Quotas for women in government have swept the globe. Yet we know little about their capacity to upend entrenched social, political, and economic hierarchies. Women, Power, and Property explores this question within the context of India, the world's largest democracy. Brulé employs a research design that maximizes causal inference alongside extensive field research to explain the relationship between political representation, backlash, and economic empowerment. Her findings show that women in government – gatekeepers – catalyze access to fundamental economic rights to property. Women in politics have the power to support constituent rights at critical junctures, such as marriage negotiations, when they can strike integrative solutions to intrahousehold bargaining. Yet there is a paradox: quotas are essential for enforcement of rights, but they generate backlash against women who gain rights without bargaining leverage. In this groundbreaking study, Brulé shows how well-designed quotas c

Written for current and aspiring managers, this textbook guides readers through the core components of compensation and puts them in the manager's chair, challenging them to apply their understanding to solve business problems such as attracting, managing, and retaining company talent. The book's central theme, supported by extensive treatment of compensating differentials, is that compensation is heavily driven by market competition. The coverage also includes analytics, negotiation and bargaining, wage theft, and non-profits and small businesses, as well as a detailed treatment of stock options. Case studies are included to demonstrate the principles in practice, and 'lessons for managers' in each chapter provide practical advice and takeaways. A rich package of online teaching and learning materials, including teaching slides, sample syllabi, additional case studies, and a test bank is also provided to support teachers and students.

出版日:2019/04/30 作者:William Spaniel  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  裝訂:精裝
Can nuclear agreements like the Iran deal work? This book develops formal bargaining models to show that they can over time, despite apparent incentives to cheat. Existing theories of nuclear proliferation fail to account for the impact of bargaining on the process. William Spaniel explores how credible agreements exist in which rival states make concessions to convince rising states not to proliferate and argues in support of nuclear negotiations as effective counter-proliferation tools. This book proves not only the existence of settlements but also the robustness of the inefficiency puzzle. In addition to examining existing agreements, the model used by Spaniel serves as a baseline for modeling other concerns about nuclear weapons.

In this new edition of Evolution of the Social Contract, Brian Skyrms uses evolutionary game theory to analyze the genesis of social contracts and investigates social phenomena including justice, communication, altruism, and bargaining. Featuring new material on evolution and information transfer, and including recent developments in game theory and evolution literature, his book introduces and applies appropriate concepts of equilibrium and evolutionary dynamics, showing how key issues can be modeled as games and considering the ways in which evolution sometimes supports, and sometimes does not support, rational choice. He discusses topics including how bargaining with neighbors promotes sharing of resources, the diversity of behavior in ultimatum bargaining in small societies, the Prisoner's Dilemma, and an investigation into signaling games and the spontaneous emergence of meaningful communication. His book will be of great interest to readers in philosophy of science, social scienc
