Task-Based Language Learning and Teaching With Technology

The Obama administration aims to lay a sound foundation for growth by investing in high-speed rail, clean energy, information technology, drinking water, and other vital infrastructures. The idea is to partner with the private sector to produce these public goods. An Obama government bank will direct these investments, making project decisions based on the merits of each project, not on politics. This approach has been a cornerstone of US foreign policy for several decades. In fact, our government-led reinvestment in America is modeled explicitly on international public banks and partnerships. However, although this foreign commercial policy is well-established with many successes, it has also been deservedly controversial and divisive. This book describes the international experience, drawing lessons on how the Obama Bank can forge partnerships to promote a durable twenty-first-century New Deal.

A central figure in Victorian science, William Whewell (1794–1866) held professorships in Mineralogy and Moral Philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, before becoming Master of the college in 1841. His mathematical textbooks, such as A Treatise on Dynamics (1823), were instrumental in bringing French analytical methods into British science. This three-volume history, first published in 1837, is one of Whewell's most famous works. Taking the 'acute, but fruitless, essays of Greek philosophy' as a starting point, it provides a history of the physical sciences that culminates with the mechanics, astronomy, and chemistry of 'modern times'. Volume 1 studies Greek physics and metaphysics, attributing their failure to a method that derived its principles from the common use of language. It surveys the state of the physical sciences in the middle ages, and deals with the rise of 'formal' astronomy - based on observation rather than calculation - as exemplified by Copernicus.

Originally published in 1973, this is a selection of the educational writings of H. E. Armstrong, edited with a full introduction by W. H. Brock. Henry Armstrong (1848–1937) was a controversial and energetic publicist for reforms in science teaching and curricula. He was concerned to make teaching at all levels less didactic and authoritarian, more practical and experimental; where possible a student should be prompted by his own curiosity, and should learn things first hand. He called his approach 'heuristic' - meaning learning through discovery - and sought to establish it through public platforms like the British Association, schools and through his own training of teachers. In his introduction Dr Brock offers a historical critique of Dr Armstrong's methods and achievements, and considers to what extent he can be seen as a progenitor of subsequent curriculum reforms.

Originally published by Cambridge in 1947, the manuscript upon which this volume is based lay dormant between the time of its creation and 1854, when it was discovered in an office of the Supreme Court in New South Wales. Whilst it is a concise account, written by the little-known Irish clergyman Thomas Campbell (1733–1795), it is notable for its frank description of encounters with Samuel Johnson. Campbell is unsparing in relating the crass aspects of Johnson's behaviour, such as his temperamentality and use of bad language, along with his manifold qualities. The text is consummately edited by James L. Clifford, with extensive notes, and contains a highly readable introduction by S. C. Roberts. It will be of value to anyone with an interest in Samuel Johnson, and the eighteenth-century literary milieu.

The edition is based on a transcription, made by Porson, of the only remaining manuscript of the lexicon: Codex Galeanus, in Trinity College Library, Cambridge. Frederick Apthorp Paley (1815–1888) published Volume 1 of his English commentary on Euripides in 1857. It contains the Greek text of seven of Euripides' most popular plays: Rhesus, Medea, Hippolytus, Alcestis, Heraclidae, Supplices and Troades, each with an introductory essay. Paley's detailed commentary is given at the foot of each page of Greek text. It discusses Euripides' language and style, explaining difficult grammatical structures, syntax and vocabulary; poetic form and Euripides' innovative approach to composing tragedy; textual variation between manuscripts; the historical and literary context of each play; and their reception history.
