這部讀書隨筆集《讀書毀了我》，自二○○○年面世以來，算上即將開印的此版一刷，二十四年間大陸簡體字版共推出五版，印了十刷(前兩次以《書之愛》之名)。繁體字版，以《書之愛》之名在台灣出過一版，印了一刷(大塊文化)；在香港出過三版，印了五刷(牛津大學出版社和BM本事出版)。二十多年歲月流過，竟還有認真的讀者尋找與閱讀本書，實在是作者當年未曾料到的。為避免對拿到是書卻尚未開卷的讀者可能產生的困惑，在出第四版時，作者特為此書擬了一個解釋性的英文副標題“Reading Reconstructs Me”(此版改為“The Reconstruction of a Self”)，既標示出「毀了我」之「毀」，乃是「再造我」之意，絕非時下「標題黨」之作為；亦透露出作為讀者的我，遨遊於思想、文字之大海時，對那些在我看來真正「有力量」的文字所高懸的評判準繩。有涯的生命裏，凡不能「毀了我」的文字，焉能令我一次又一次獲得徹頭徹尾的自我之「新生」(Vita Nova)？

In Christianity and Education in Modern China, Wong Man Kong, George Kam Wah Mak, and other contributors demonstrate how Christianity served as a driving force in the development of modern education in China. Each of the chapters offers new insights into Christian involvement in different issues concerning education in modern China. The contributors examine how Christian missionaries and Chinese Christian educators interacted with China’s social, cultural, and political contexts. This book examines the British cultural engagement with Hong Kong in the second half of the twentieth century. It shows how the territory fit unusually within Britain’s decolonisation narratives and served as an occasional foil for examining Britain’s own culture during a period of perceived stagnation and decline. Drawing on a wide range of archival and published primary sources, Hong Kong and British Culture, 1945–97 investigates such themes as Hong Kong as a site of unrestrained capitalism, modernisation, and good government, as well as an arena of male social and sexual opportunity. It also examines the ways in which Hong Kong Chinese embraced British culture, and the competing predictions that British observers made concerning the colony’s return to Chinese sovereignty. How did lay people in old China save their lives when dealing with acute or chronic health issues? Conventional medicine was costly and might not have been an option for many. Instead, people in villages and towns relied on remedies drawn from a woodblock-printed illustrated booklet called the Seventy-Two Therapies, first published in 1847. The goal of this book is to foster an appreciation of China’s long tradition of folk remedies. Each folk remedy is illustrated by a page from the circa 1860s woodblock edition of the Seventy-Two Therapies which the author used for translation. Making National Heroes is an ethnography of the making of national heroes in the commemoration of the Second World War in contemporary China. Tuberculosis Control and Institutional Change in Shanghai, 1911-2011 is the first book on the most widespread and deadly infectious disease in China, both historically and today. Weaving together interviews with data from periodicals and local archives in Shanghai, Rachel Core examines the rise and fall of tuberculosis control in China from the 1950s to the 1990s. Under the socialist work unit system, the vast majority of people had guaranteed employment, a host of benefits tied to their workplace, and there was little mobility--factors that made the delivery of medical and public health services possible in both urban and rural areas. Shao Xunmei, poet, essayist, publisher, and printer, played a signifcant role in the publication and dissemination of journals and pictorial magazines in Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s, but this is the first collection of his prose writings to be published in English. The essays in this book, some of which were selected by the writer's daughter, Shao Xiaohong, include long essays such as “One Man Talking” and “A Year in Shanghai” as well as several shorter essays on subjects as diverse as the caricatures of Miguel Covarrubias, woodblockprinting, and pictorial magazines—all of which were published in Shao’s own magazines.

In Modern Chinese Counter-Enlightenment, Peng Hsiao-yen argues that a trend of Counter-Enlightenment had grown from the late Qing to the May Fourth era in the 1910s to the 1920s and continued to the 1940s. She demonstrates how Counter-Enlightenment was manifested with case studies such as Lu Xun's writings in the late 1900s, the Aesthetic Education movement from the 1910s to 1920s, and the Science and Lifeview debate in the 1920s.
