史學方法論是訓練史學家的一門學問，舉凡史料的蒐集，史料的考證，史事的敘述，史事的解釋，科學方法、藝術想像的運用，客觀立場、忠實態度的維持，純真精神、恢弘胸襟的培養，淵博學識、豐富思想的涵育，皆在討論範圍之內。本書在此範圍內，以古今中外數千年的史學方法為藍本，謹慎立論，平情發揮、所涉及者，技術的方法以外，擴及史學理論與史學思想。如闕疑，懷疑，紀實，求真，是史學理論，應用在歷史研究上，便成為史學方法，如經世思想，和平思想，大同思想，人道思想，中外所常見的史學思想，與歷史著作的寫成，旦夕不能相離。本書免於雕蟲小技之譏，而自成一格，或在於此。
