Animal Farm, published in 1945, is a satirical novel by British novelist and essayist George Orwell (1903-1950), pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair. Orwell is best known for Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). As a socialist, he was a keen critic of imperialism, fascism, Stalinism, and capitalism. His works are concerned with the sociopolitical conditions of his time. Animal Farm, with great critical and popular success, is a witty, satirical allegory about the failure of Soviet totalitarianism. Some events in the book are based on events from the Soviet Union during the Stalin era. This novel is ostensibly about a group of animals who oust the humans from the farm and run it themselves, only to have it corrupted into a brutal tyranny on its own.
