Ovid's Heroides, a collection of twenty-one epistles in elegiac verse, consists of two groups, the first comprising fourteen poems addressed by heroines of mythology to their absent lovers or husbands. Dialogue has developed from more primitive forms of social communication in the course of evolution. What is the nature of human thought? A long dominant view holds that the mind is a general problem-solving device that approaches all questions in much the same way.
