夏濟安、夏志清昆仲，中國現代文學批評界的兩大巨擘，他們早年的求學生涯，既是東西方學術交織融匯的實例，又是民國和1949年後「大歷史」的親身見證。他們的往來書信經由志清先生鄭重珍藏，經夏志清太太王洞女士授權，蘇州大學季進教授註釋整理，首次向外界披露。本書分為四卷，收錄了1947年夏志清赴美求學到1965年夏濟安因病逝世的17年間，兄弟兩人的通信六百餘封。在這些書信中，他們說家常、談感情、論文學、品電影、議時政，推心置腹，無話不談。我們可以看到夏志清如何從一位年輕的求學者，一步步成長為國際著名學者，也可以看到夏濟安如何流轉各地，為實現自己的理想抱負努力奮鬥的艱辛。夏志清（1921–2013），江蘇吳縣（今蘇州市）人，生於上海浦東，中國文學評論家，教授。1946年9月隨長兄夏濟安至北京大學擔任助教，醉心於西歐古典文學，因研究威廉‧布萊克檔案（William　Blake Archive）論文脫穎而出，取得留美獎學金至耶魯大學攻讀英文碩士、博士。在紐約州立學院任教時，獲得洛克菲勒基金會贊助，完成《中國現代小說史》一書，也奠定他學者評論家的地位。1961年任紐約哥倫比亞大學教席。2006年7月，當選台灣中央研究院院士。夏濟安（1916–1965），江蘇吳縣人。夏志清教授的兄長。上海光華大學英文系畢業，曾任教西南聯大、北京大學外語系和香港新亞書院。1950年赴台後任教於台灣大學外文系，為早期小說作家白先勇、歐陽子、王文興、陳若曦、葉維廉等人的啟蒙老師，1956年與吳魯芹、劉守宜等創辦《文學雜誌》並兼任主編，在雜誌上主張「樸素的、清醒的、理智的」文學，與其弟夏志清對當代文學的貢獻十分深遠。1959年赴美，在西雅圖華盛頓大學、加州柏克萊大學作研究，主要工作是研究中國共產黨黨史。1965年2月23日因腦溢血病逝於美國奧克蘭。夏濟安的中文著作還有《夏濟安選集》、《現代英文選評註》等；英文著作有The Gate of Darkness，這是一本1949年以前左派文人的評論集。
