John Willis Clark, the Cambridge academic and antiquarian, began collecting literature connected with Cambridge in the 1860s. In 1910 he bequeathed to Cambridge University Library his collection of over ten thousand books, pamphlets and pieces of print relating, directly or indirectly, to Cambridge University, including some whose primary reference is to the town or county of Cambridge. Published in 1912, this catalogue documents Clark's extensive collection, listing the literature he amassed from all periods and upon every subject. Clark had a particular interest in college architecture and tracing the growth of the collegiate system, which explains the inclusion of works relating to Oxford and Eton in the collection. Arranged as a dictionary catalogue, with authors and subjects listed alphabetically, the work reflects Clark's aim to illustrate the history and development of Cambridge through its literature, from an historical and biographical point of view.

The Reinaert Fragments are a collection of seven pages of a Middle Dutch poem attributed to the fifteenth-century Flemish writer Hinrek van Alckmer, and printed in Antwerp in about 1487. This book, originally published in 1927, contains photographic reproductions of the pages, alongside clear transcriptions of the text and three beautiful woodcut illustrations. Karl Breul's detailed introduction sketches the history and development of the story of Reynard the Fox, from its origins in oral tradition and the medieval beast epic to Goethe's famous 'Reinecke Fuchs', indicating the place of the Reinaert poem amongst the various verse and prose versions. The book also includes a corrected version of the van Alckmer fragments, and examines their relationship with the Reinaert II and Reinke texts. The book will be useful to those studying Middle Dutch and Middle Low German literature or printing history, and others interested in the Reynard story.

Adolphus Ballard (1867–1915) was an English historian specialising in the medieval history of the borough. This volume, first published in 1913, was the first major examination of borough charters from the early medieval period. Ballard analyses an extensive collection of municipal documents and charters dating from before 1216 to understand the stages in the origin and development of boroughs, their mercantile and jurisdictional privileges and the relationship of burgage privileges and finances to those in other boroughs. The first half of the book discusses these topics in detail, with three supplementary essays concerning the essentials of the borough, its development as a legal entity, and comparisons with borough developments in other European countries which provide additional historical context. The second half gives the Latin text and English translations of the collection of documents analysed in the first part.

This volume is a continuation of Adolphus Ballard's study of medieval borough charters, British Borough Charters 1042–1216. After Ballard's death in 1915, completion of his work was undertaken by Professor James Tait, (1862–1944) and first published in 1923. Tait follows Ballard's structure from his previous work and divides this volume into two parts. In the first part Tait analyses a comprehensive collection of borough documents and charters dating from between 1216 and 1307 to examine changes in the development of boroughs, burgage and mercantile privileges, and the effect of the growth in trade and trade regulation during this period. Differences between borough charters in the twelfth and the thirteenth century are also discussed. The second half of this volume provides extensive examples of borough documents in Latin, with English translations, including examples of borough formation, jurisdictional, mercantile and tenurial privileges and the development of public services.

The algebraic theory of automata was created by Schützenberger and Chomsky over 50 years ago and there has since been a great deal of development. Classical work on the theory to noncommutative power series has been augmented more recently to areas such as representation theory, combinatorial mathematics and theoretical computer science. This book presents to an audience of graduate students and researchers a modern account of the subject and its applications. The algebraic approach allows the theory to be developed in a general form of wide applicability. For example, number-theoretic results can now be more fully explored, in addition to applications in automata theory, codes and non-commutative algebra. John William Salter (1820–1869) was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his work as palaeontologist to the Geological Survey of Great Britain. This is a complete catalogue of the Cambrian and Silurian fossils in the Geological Museum at the University of Cambridge. Preceded by a detailed introductory section on the Palæozoic system, the catalogue is arranged by geological strata, covering the various groups of Cambrian and Silurian fossils. The entries include detailed illustrations, along with references to the location of each fossil in the collection, its name and details of its place of origin. Revised by staff of the University and published posthumously in 1873, the catalogue also contains a substantial preface by Adam Sedgwick, famous for his role in the development of modern geology,which provides fascinating insights into the geological advances of the Victorian era.

Margaret Gatty (1809–1873) was an English writer best known for her researches on sundials and British seaweeds. After marrying the Rev. Alfred Gatty in 1839, she moved to Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, where she pursued her literary and scientific studies. This volume, first published in 1872, contains detailed descriptions of various styles of sundials, many taken from Gatty's own collection. Over 350 sundials from across Britain and Europe are described, and each sundial's location is noted in this work, which was one of the first popular books on the subject.
