本書試圖從國共內戰遺緒探討臺灣小說中呈現的復原神話與情感結構。戰爭造成了各種的傷害，帶來積極復原的渴望，召喚意義的同時，造成了不同以往的新感覺、新思維。戰爭遺緒是重述記憶時的新基點，致使復原並非完全是過去的重現，反而添加了許多現下的想像與願望的結果。因此本書將借重朱迪斯‧巴特勒（Judith Butler）戰爭框架（frames of war）以及雷蒙‧威廉斯（Raymond Williams）情感結構（structures of feeling）的概念，勾勒國共內戰後臺灣小說對於國族復原的想像敘事。分析小說家如何建構復原神話敘事以獲取意義，產生認同的動能，同時讓支撐此神話的情感結構成為可以指認、分析的對象。最終提出「復原神話」與「情感結構」術語之理論界說，以此思考兩者對現下文化與心靈之影響。
