Implement real-time data processing applications on the Raspberry Pi. This book uniquely helps you work with data science concepts as part of real-time applications using the Raspberry Pi as a localized cloud. You'll start with a brief introduction to data science followed by a dedicated look at the fundamental concepts of Python programming. Here you'll install the software needed for Python programming on the Pi, and then review the various data types and modules available. The next steps are to set up your Pis for gathering real-time data and incorporate the basic operations of data science related to real-time applications. You'll then combine all these new skills to work with machine learning concepts that will enable your Raspberry Pi to learn from the data it gathers. Case studies round out the book to give you an idea of the range of domains where these concepts can be applied. By the end of Data Science with the Raspberry Pi, you'll understand that many applications are now de

This innovative study investigates the reception of medieval manuscripts over a long century, 1470–1585, spanning the reigns of Edward IV to Elizabeth I. Members of the Tudor gentry family who owned these manuscripts had properties in Willesden and professional affiliations in London. These men marked the leaves of their books with signs of use, allowing their engagement with the texts contained there to be reconstructed. Through detailed research, Margaret Connolly reveals the various uses of these old books: as a repository for family records; as a place to preserve other texts of a favourite or important nature; as a source of practical information for the household; and as a professional manual for the practising lawyer. Investigation of these family-owned books reveals an unexpectedly strong interest in works of the past, and the continuing intellectual and domestic importance of medieval manuscripts in an age of print.

This work marks a significant and tragic moment in the history of medieval Jewish–Christian relations, as it promulgates one of Europe's first allegations of Jewish ritual murder of a Christian child. Composed in stages between 1150 and 1173 by Thomas, a monk at the Benedictine priory of Norwich, the Life narrates in seven books the murder (in 1144), discovery, miracles and canonisation (though he was deprived of sainthood at the Reformation) of a local boy, William. Offering an invaluable window into daily life in twelfth-century East Anglia, the work also stands at the origins of a myth with profound consequences for medieval Jewish communities. Edited by Augustus Jessop (1823–1914) and M. R. James (1862–1936) from a unique manuscript, this 1896 edition offers the original Latin text and a modern English translation, supplemented by detailed considerations of the textual, historical and political contexts shaping this remarkable document.

This groundbreaking study of coinage in early medieval England is the first to take account of the very significant additions to the corpus of southern English coins discovered in recent years and to situate this evidence within the wider historical context of Anglo-Saxon England and its continental neighbours. Its nine chapters integrate historical and numismatic research to explore who made early medieval coinage, who used it and why. The currency emerges as a significant resource accessible across society and, through analysis of its production, circulation and use, the author shows that control over coinage could be a major asset. This control was guided as much by ideology as by economics and embraced several levels of power, from kings down to individual craftsmen. Thematic in approach, this innovative book offers an engaging, wide-ranging account of Anglo-Saxon coinage as a unique and revealing gauge for the interaction of society, economy and government.

This is a comparative study of how the societies of late-medieval England and France reacted to the long period of conflict between them commonly known as the Hundred Years War. Beginning with an analysis of contemporary views regarding the war. Two chapters follow which describe the military aim of the protagonists, military and naval organisation, recruitment, and the raising of taxes. The remainder of the book describes and analyses some of the main social and economic effects of war upon society, the growth of a sense of national consciousness in time of conflict, and the social criticism which came from those who reacted to changes and development brought about by war. Although intended primarily as a textbook for students, Dr Allmand's study is much more than that. It makes an important general contribution to the history of war in medieval times, and opens up new and original perspectives on a familiar topic.

This book, first published in 2000, is a pioneering study of politics and society in the early Middle Ages. Whereas it is widely believed that the source materials for early medieval Europe are too sparse to allow sustained study of the workings of social and political relationships on the ground, this book focuses on a uniquely well-documented area to investigate the basis of power. Topics covered include the foundation of monasteries, their relationship with the laity, and their role as social centres; the significance of urbanism; the control of land, the development of property rights and the organization of states; community, kinship and lordship; justice and dispute settlement; the uses of the written word; violence and the feud; and the development of political structures from the Roman empire to the high Middle Ages.

This volume is a continuation of the catalogue compiled by Colin F. Baker and Meira Polliack, Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic Manuscripts in the Cambridge Genizah Collections: Arabic Old Series (T-S Ar. 1a-54) published in 2001, and covers the manuscripts in the New Series. The volume describes almost 9,500 Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic fragments of the Cairo Genizah. The manuscripts include Bible translations and commentaries, philosophical, medical and historical texts, as well as business and private letters. They will be of interest to scholars from a broad range of fields including theology, history of the Middle East, Jewish studies, Middle Arabic, comparative Semitic studies, medicine, mathematics and geography. These manuscripts offer a rare glimpse into the everyday lives of the Jews living in Arab lands in the medieval period.
