A French historian and curator of the manuscript department at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Benjamin Guérard (1797–1854) made a considerable contribution to the study of medieval French cathedrals and monasteries. Having studied at Dijon, Guérard became a banker in Paris, before studying at the École royales des chartes where he trained as an archivist. He was a founding member of the Société de l'histoire de France, and this publication was part of the society's first series of documents inédits. Guérard was elected to the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres and became the director of the École des chartes in 1848. This collection of the medieval charters of the Abbey of Saint-Père at Chartres was published in Paris in 1840. Volume 2 contains Guérard's transcriptions of the charters, dating from the twelfth to the mid-fifteenth centuries.

Wolfram's Parzival is one of the great medieval romances, but the complexities and obscurities of source, language and the Grail symbol have led to a virtual neglect by scholars of the problems of structure and characterisation. Medieval characterisation tended towards idealisation, symbolism and the view that the individual could be considered a member of a class or type; in Wolfram however the beginnings of individual characterisation can be seen. This 1966 book studies the types and techniques of character-portrayal in Parzival and of the emergence of the idea of individuality. Dr Blamires analyses each of the main characters - Gahmuret, Herzeloyde, Parzival, Gawan and Feirefiz - and shows how Wolfram presents them and the variety of methods he uses. From this approach he deals with the main problems the poem presents and brings out its closeness and complexity of texture.

This book deals with the rise and fall of the kingdom of Northumbria. It examines the mechanisms of ethnic, political, social and religious change which, beginning after the end of the Roman Empire, welded the large and disparate area between the Humber and the Firth of Forth into one of the most powerful kingdoms of early medieval England, and those which led to its disintegration and its replacement by political structures of northern England and southern Scotland. The story is set in a wider European context so that the history of Northumbria is seen as paradigmatic for an understanding of state formation and religious and cultural change in the early medieval world. Full attention is given to archaeological and art-historical material, and the extent to which narrative sources were shaped by sectional interests and created imagined visions of the past.
