Understanding Language Testing

Kudrun is a German epic poem extant in only one manuscript, the Ambraser Handschrift of the early sixteenth century. It is thought, however, to have been composed within the decade 1230–40, and is thus contemporaneous with other epics of the classical age of Middle High German literature, such as the Nibelungenlied, Parzival and Tristan. Scholars have done Kudrun a disservice, however, by presenting it as a conscious imitator and rival of the Nibelungenlied. In this 1978 book, Dr Campbell sets the record straight and secures proper recognition for Kudrun. Regarding the epic as a unity, he pays particular attention to the language of the text, and past emendations. He also examines the degree to which characters in Kudrun impress as individual creations. Dr Campbell's conclusion is that the Kudrun poet had a keen understanding of human nature which enabled him to present his characters with impressive accuracy, consistency and vitality.

The essays reprinted in this 1980 book were first published at various times between 1951 and 1972. They deal largely with medieval German heroic and epic poetry, emphasising the way the basic language and imagery of that literature were rooted in a deep understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Professor Hatto presents these essays in the hope of enabling readers to recapture the significance of early poetry, the understanding of which is of increasing importance in an age where man is divorced from his natural setting.

The German classicist introduces his understanding of philology as a discipline that is not solely the study of language but also a subject incorporating historical and philosophical elements. William W. Goodwin (1831–1912) was Eliot Professor of Greek at Harvard from 1860 to 1901, and was the first director of the American School in Athens. This, his most important book, was written for nineteenth-century American students to make available to them the latest European developments in the understanding of Greek syntax, as well as his own original material. It went through several editions between 1860 and 1890, and remains an invaluable resource for scholars of the Greek language. This is a reissue of the 1867 edition, published in Cambridge Massachusetts by Sever and Francis. It presents a detailed and well organized discussion of moods, tenses, infinitive, participles and verbal adjectives. Goodwin includes a large collection of examples taken from a wide range of major Greek writers to illustrate every variety of each construction. An index of these examples is also provided for easy reference.

The Cambridge University Press published (1945–1967) in six volumes Professor Bailey's transcriptions of Saka manuscripts found in Sin Kiang and Kansu (of the ancient kingdom of Khotan). They are central to any study of Old Iranian and the Iranian dialects; and they are also important for further understanding of the religious tradition in the sacred Avesta of the Zoroastrians, and for the history of the peoples of Central Asia generally. This 1979 dictionary represents the fulfilment of a plan formed in 1934 which required first the editing and transcription of the manuscripts, and then the slow elucidation of the whole corpus of texts. It contains a linguistic analysis and translation of all the Iranian words used in the texts. It is the necessary key to the understanding of the texts, to the mastery of the language itself, and to the linking of Khotan Saka into the Indo-European linguistic tradition.

First published in 1863, this is the enchanting account of the travels of George Fleming (1833–1901) in the far north of China. Fleming began his epic journey in Tien-tsin, where he was stationed as an army doctor at a British military garrison; there he was granted special permission to travel almost 700 miles as far as Moukden and to Manchu Tartary, the birth place of the Manchu dynasty. Fleming's route took him through many regions that had been inaccessible to western travellers until the Treaty of Tien-tsin (1858–1859). His vivid account describes the people and customs he met; the landscape; the climate; the language and dialects; the agricultural practices of the various regions; and the struggles and hardships he faced during his journey. Fleming's work is a monument of Victorian travel literature and an important source in understanding Victorian perceptions of China and of Chinese culture.

This book was originally published in 1970. Aspect - the relationship between imperfective and perfective verbs - has always been one of the features of Russian grammar that English-speaking students find particularly difficult. It has in fact often appeared to be an insoluble mystery, largely because of the frequency of exceptions to the stated rules. Mr Forsyth suggests that this is the fault of the rules, and that the difficulties in the way of understanding the functioning of aspect stem chiefly from the faulty basis of the traditional definitions. The operation of imperfective and perfective are examined in all forms of the verb including the imperative, infinitive, participles and gerunds, and their usage is amply illustrated by examples from Russian. The aim is to present a total picture of aspect in the Russian language which will be of practical interest to advanced students of Russian, and also contributed to the theoretical study of aspect as a grammatical category.

This is a detailed application of the methods of linguistic analysis to the sentence structure of Malay. It is based on extended analysis of short dramatic texts in colloquial Malay by Dato' Dr Haji Zainal-Abidin bin Ahmad, best know under his pen name Za'ba. Miss Lewis' analyses are, with certain modifications, kept within the grammatical framework which she deduced from a thesis presented by Dr E. M. F. Payne in 1964. She has shown that the framework is viable when applied to actual texts, though her analysis leads to certain modifications and extensions of the original plan. The book has a double interest. Students with a basic knowledge of Malay will find that the investigation into sentence formation refines their understanding of the language. In this book, first published in 1977, Richard Flathman sets out to provide a systematic understanding and an assessment of individual rights. He pursues the first objective primarily by analysing the salient characteristics of the uses of 'rights' in ordinary language.
