Andrew Reed (1787–1862) was a Congregational Minister and one of the leading philanthropists of his day, fund-raising for and founding a number of orphanages and asylums. In 1834, he and fellow Congregational Minister James Matheson (1766–1840) were sent to the Congregational churches of the United States, in order to promote peace and friendship between the two communities. This two-volume 1835 work consists of thirty-nine letters in which the authors recount their journey, and their meetings with their fellow Congregationalists. They visited a large number of cities, mostly on the Eastern Seaboard, and made one excursion to Canada. In Volume 1, the focus is on their arrival in America and their first impression of the country and its people. They note with approval that that 'there is less claptrap, less trifling, and no frivolity' in Congregational services in the United States, as compared with England.

Robert Hatch Kennett (1864–1932) was a prominent biblical scholar who made key contributions to Old Testament criticism. Originally published in 1933, this book gathers together essays and articles which represent Kennett's most typical work, illustrating his distinctive role in the development of biblical study. Providing a supplement to Kennett's more specialised writings, in particular the important Old Testament Essays (1928), the material is of a relatively simple and introductory character, suitable for readers less familiar with the details of the field. Samuel Rawson Gardiner (1829–1902) was a distinguished Victorian historian of the seventeenth century who coined the term 'Puritan Revolution' and was noted for his use of and editorial work on primary sources. This ten-volume work was published in 1883–4, though he had already published eight volumes on the period 1603–37, of which the first two were considerably revised for this edition; and in later works he continued the story through the Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate. The series was highly regarded in its time, and reprinted often, although it was not without its critics. Gardiner aimed at writing 'scientific history', relying on the facts to speak for themselves, but inevitably his selection of evidence, and the conclusions he drew from it, were coloured by the attitudes of his time. Its chief value today is for Gardiner's wide knowledge of less familiar source materials, and for historiographers.

The Irish-born gardener and writer William Robinson (1838–1935) travelled widely to study gardens and gardening in Europe and America. In 1871 he founded a weekly illustrated periodical, The Garden, which he owned until 1919, and he published numerous books on different aspects of horticulture. Topics included annuals, hardy perennials, alpines and subtropical plants, as well as accounts of his travels. High Victorian garden fashion involved formal beds of exotic and hothouse flowers. Robinson was influential in introducing less formal garden designs, using plants more suited to the English climate. This work was published in 1871, and showed how impressive outdoor displays could be achieved from hardier species, rather than relying on expensive greenhouses for short-lived plants. Robinson's most famous books, The Wild Garden (1870) and The English Flower Garden (1883) are also reissues in this series.

This book was originally published in 1976 as the third edition of a book first published in 1938. After 1950, when the previous edition was published, advancing technology made possible a great deal of experimental work on the properties of negative ions in gases. Photodetachment techniques became an important source of information about negative ions and provided values of electron affinities with accuracies which were previously unavailable. As knowledge of negative ions increased, the nature of their influence on the physical phenomena in which they are concerned was more readily understood. Inclusion of so much fresh material means that less emphasis is placed on some earlier knowledge and techniques. While it was necessary to restrict the introductory discussion of different branches of physics concerned, sufficient background is included to make comprehensible the subsequent specific discussion of applications to negative ions.

Reginald Heber (1783–1826), second bishop of Calcutta, was appointed to the role in 1823, and had for a long time been interested in the Church of England's overseas missions. His diocese in the subcontinent had been established less than a decade before, in 1814, and included India, southern Africa and Australia. Heber travelled extensively throughout, visiting remote Anglican communities and later publishing journals about his travels. In addition, he was well-known as a hymn-writer. Sermons Preached in India, however, was published posthumously in 1829, and edited by his widow, Amelia. Edward Gordon Duff (1863–1924) was a bibliographer and librarian with a particular interest in early printed books. He was librarian of the John Rylands Library, Manchester, from 1893 to 1900, and Sandars Reader in Bibliography at Cambridge in 1899, 1904 and 1911. Alongside research and writing he also did freelance cataloguing. Duff's work set new standards of accuracy in bibliography, which he considered a science. Early Printed Books was published in 1893 as part of A. W. Pollard's series Books about Books, and became a standard work on the subject. Duff provides a concise and clear account of the development of printing and its spread from Germany across Europe, country by country, deliberately highlighting some of the less well known aspects of the subject.
