This title recreates, from a unique, comprehensive perspective, eight important scenes of China, namely the semi-cave dwelling in the Neolithic Age, Yin Xu, the Terracotta Army, Buddha statues of the Wei and Jin dynasties, Tang’s capital Chang’an, River Scene at Qingming Festival of Song, house of Ming scholar, and the Eight Banners of Qing. In complementary to lively storytelling, Minecraft and illustrations are incorporated to kindle young readers’ interest in history.

This book is a collection of watercolours and sketches by Henrietta Alcock and her husband, the British Consul, Rutherford Alcock, along with the stories behind them. The more than 100 images in this book feature picturesque natural landscapes, traditional Chinese architecture, and scenes of consular life. They bring Henrietta Alcock out of the shadows, providing a unique picture of her as an amateur artist, the wife of a consul and, most importantly, a woman in empire. What has traditionally been the main matter explored by Cantonese literati? From the earliest poets—oceanic elements and riparian scenes contrasted with stunning rock formations; a love for the exotic, especially local plants, products, and lore; Daoist transcendentalism; and, finally, a concern for pointing up local loyalty to the distant throne and a fierce pride in being culturally authentically Chinese.
