Proving once again that the interview is a powerful means of discerning knowledge, this is a collection of responses by Rorty (comparative literature, Stanford U.) to questions about whether and how much philosophy applies to American public life. His comments on which philosophers are understood by other philosophers to be philosophers, on how philosophy applies to biotechnology, and especially on how his thought has led to his personal brand of political belief are couched in colloquial terms; but Rorty clearly makes his points on public intellectual commentary, engagement, criticism, and even trade unionism. Rorty is anti-authoritarian and has good reasons for being so, citing past and recent abominations, but he is also grounded in a sincere and positive view about what constitutes the political heart. Judging from some of the interviewers' questions, he also suffers fools graciously. Annotation c2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
