商品簡介
Dubois (history, National U. of Singapore) examines the varied expressions of religious life in rural North China as they intersected with the forces of historical change and evolution of local society from the mid-19th through the 20th centuries. The study is based on fieldwork conducted by Dubois in a rural Chinese village during 1997- 1998, 1999 and 2002, and on archival materials from libraries in Tianjin, Beijing, and Tokyo. Coverage includes the role of the village in the organization and propagation of religion, the circulation of knowledge, the inability of urban culture and sects to penetrate rural religiosity, the flashes of millenarianism, and the importance of everyday ritual and moral concerns to the long-term evolution of village society.
