This introductory textbook is concerned with planning that balances human requirements to exploit the land with what the author says is an "equally important need" to maintain and enhance environmental quality. Common themes throughout this type of planning are change conditions, myriad choices, and everpresent risk. The key to planning then, believes Lein (geography, Ohio University), is prescience in order to minimize uncertainties, unfortunate contingencies, and downright errors. While the book is firmly situated in real world problems, Lein has an eye to eco-philosophies like deep ecology and ecofeminism which are briefly discussed. James Lein is a professor of geography at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He serves as deputy director of OhioView and is a member of the executive board of directors of the AmericaView project. He specializes in the application of remote sensing and geographic information systems in environmental planning, risk assessment, and regional landscape analysis.
His research interests focus on the monitoring of land-use/land-cover change, urban morphology and homeland defense, the integration of remote sensing and geographic information systems in regional planning and environmental impact assessment, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence methods to aid environmental decision making.
