This is arguably the seminal work in historical andphilosophical analysis of the twentieth century. Originallydelivered for the William James lecture series at HarvardUniversity in 1932-33, it remains the cornerstone of thehistory of ideas. Lovejoy sees philosophy's history as one ofconfusion of ideas, a prime example of which is the idea of a"great chain of being"--a universe linked in theology, scienceand values by pre-determined stages in all phases of life.
Lovejoy's view is one of dualities in nature and society,with both error and truth as part of the natural orderof things. The past reminds us that the ruling modes ofthought of our own age, which we may view as clear, coherentand firmly grounded, are unlikely to be seen withsuch certainty by posterity. The Great Chain of Being isan excursion into the past, with a clear mission--to discouragethe assumption that all is known, or that what isknown is not subject to modifi cation at a later time.
Lovejoy reaffirms the "intrinsic worth of diversity,"as a caution against certitude. By this he does not meantoleration of indiff erence, or relativity for its own sake, butan appreciation of mental and physical process of human beings.As Peter Stanlis notes in his introduction: "Faith in thegreat chain of being was fi nally largely extinguished by thecombined infl uences of Romantic idealism, Darwin's theoryof evolution, and Einstein's theory of relativity." Few booksremain as alive to prospects for the future by reconsideringfollies of the past as does Lovejoy's stunning work.
Arthur O. Lovejoy (1873-1962) was professorof philosophy at John Hopkins Universitywhere he founded the History ofIdeas Club. He believed that the history ofideas should focus on singular concepts.He founded the Journal of the History ofIdeas. Some of his most famous writingsinclude Reflections on Human Nature, TheRevolt against Dualism, and Primitivismand Related Ideas in Antiquity.
Peter J. Stanlis is Distinguished Professor of HumanitiesEmeritus at Rockford College. He edited the Burke Newsletterand Studies in Burke for thirteen years, in addition to his manyarticles and books on various aspects of Edmund Burke's thoughtand politics. His most recent work is Robert Frost: The Poet asPhilosopher.
